We all love to be in good shape but this tends to be tricky due to our busy schedules and the belief that you need to head to the gym to be able to be in top shape. Going to the gym is a great idea but what if there is no gym in the neighborhood or you just don’t have the extra cash to pay up for a membership? Does that mean you can’t exercise? Of course not. Being broke or busy should not translate to being unfit. Here are four ways to be in good shape without knocking at the gym door.

  1. Cycling – bike riding. Do you own a bike and work a few kilometers from home? Riding your bike to work everyday at a moderate speed is not only cheap for your pocket because you don’t spend any money on fuel but it’s also a great way of exercising and keeping your body in good shape. So leave the car at home and pick up your bike it’s good for your heart and pocket.
  2. Walking – a brisk walk around you neighborhood for about 30 minutes everyday is not only good for your body but also your mental health. By walking your mind is able to focus on other things which helps reduce stress and gives you an opportunity of meeting and interacting with new people and getting to know your neighborhood and neighbors. When going to work consider getting off the bus a stage or two from your office and walk the rest of the journey this helps you to be alert and in an upbeat mood which is a healthy way to start off your day. If you are renting an apartment, you may consider staying at the top floor to help you with your exercise routine “A man’s health can be judged by which he takes two at a time: pills or stairs”
  3. Jumping rope. Skipping rope is one of the cheapest and portable exercise that helps tone your muscles and improve cardiovascular fitness. Most people associate rope jumping with pre-school kids however this is one exercise that is best for the whole family and you can do it from anywhere because the equipment fits in your handbag/briefcase.
  4. House chores. Ever wondered why your house help is in good shape yet doesn’t visit the gym? The answer is she has turned house chores into a way of exercising so why not join her into having some fun and keeping fit. Cooking for your family is healthy and a sign of love but this can also be turned into an exercise routine. While cooking put on your favorite music and swing those hips as you stir your food away. When you are no longer stirring you can do shoulder squeezes as you wait for your meal to cook. Picking up toys and other items from the floor should not be a boring and tiresome task. Don’t just bend while picking up items from the floor pick them up by squatting. Keep your back straight squat deeply by bending your knees and hold for 5 seconds before rising up you can increase and hold for 15 seconds once you are able to.

Hope this helps keep fit while going about your daily routine.
