The other day I walked into a clinic for random check up. Its not that I was feeling unwell nope just went in out of curiosity to know how healthy I was. To my surprise, I found myself to have more complications than I would have thought of or even believed if someone had dropped them on my face. After writing down the prescription for me, the doctor went ahead and advised me to take an apple every day for the next one week and then go back and redo the tests. This got me thinking really hard and I decided to do a small research on the health benefits of apples and what I found was just wow.
An apple though not so popular to everyone around because of the price compared to other cheaper fruits like bananas, oranges and mangoes, is a great source of vitamins, pectin, dietary fibre and an impressive list of antioxidants. The health benefits of apples are as diverse as their global varieties. Being rich in minerals and vitamins eating an apple help strengthen your blood. Apples can be used in prevention and treatment of some diseases including asthma. According to researchers, a child with asthma who takes a glass of apple juice everyday suffers less wheezing than one who is asthmatic and doesn’t take apple juice. Here are some of the benefits of eating an apple:
According to researchers, triterpenoids found in apples have potent to inhibit growth activities against cancer cells in the breast, colon and the liver. Also, the consumption of apples which happen to be rich in flavonoid and naringin may help reduce the risk of developing cancer.
- Healthy heart
Apples contain high soluble fibre which when consumed, help slow down the build up of cholesterol plaque in arteries. Apples are also rich in phenolic which also help prevent cholesterol from solidifying on artery walls hence preventing coronary artery disease.
- Constipation and diarrhea
Being rich in fibre, consumption of apples help to either absorb excess water and slow down your bowels or pull water from your colon to help keep things moving along and avoid constipation.
- Liver detoxification
The current environment we live in has a lot of toxins that we consume on daily basis both from food and drinks and this gives the liver a tough time cleaning them out of the body. Good news is that eating apples, can help detoxify your liver.
- Boosting your immune system
Are you stressed out? Or just looking to boost your immune system? Well according to research, an antioxidant called quercetin that is found in red apples can be a great answer to your quest.
- Diabetes control
Apples contain galacturonic acid which helps in lowering the body’s need for insulin hence helping in managing diabetes.
There are more benefits but these are the ones I was able write about today. Now you have more reason to believe in the old adage that says “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away”.
Eat an apple and live a healthy life!
